Tour OVERVIEW

This Thailand tour is full of variety and like a little adventure! The selected roads are a mix of rural two lanes and a variety of surfaces and gravel/dirt roads. During most part of the tour, we will ride through areas of spectacular mountainous beauty. We will ride to places where others have no access to. This tour is out of the ordinary.

Our reference to “off-road” riding is meaning more of general unsealed roads. Nothing too extreme like enduro single trail. More it means (1) some challenge of dirt riding without extreme, (2) to have a change of scenery from always on a sealed road, & (3) also as those unsealed roads normally take you through more remote and unique regions it can get you away from traffic and crowds….

We start riding to the top of Thailand, the highest mountain in the country (Doi Inthanon), 2,565 meters. Doing some gravel riding along the Thai – Myanmar border to Mae Sot. We visit the site of Thailand’s first capital city, Sukothai – UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We also visit some of the lesser-known areas like Nan, which for centuries remained autonomous and cut off from the outside world. Discover the scenic 1148 with endless gentle curves and stunning scenery.

We explore Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle, the region made famous by Khun Sa, once one of the world’s most infamous drug king, who even had his own private army. Between Mae Taeng and Mae Hong Son, there are 1,864 bends or twisties which gives everybody a great opportunity to improve their cornering skills whatever their level of expertise.

Another highlight of the trip is the visit to the Long Neck Women of the Kayan Tribe, famous for the brass rings that they wear around their necks. Before returning to Chiang Mai we do some more gravel/off-road in the area of Wat Chen.

And In every region during the tour, we will feast on the local Thai cuisine.

Day 3 / Mae Sariang-Mae Sot

The early risers (6 am) may optionally visit the local morning market and give alms to the monks. The idea of the alms giving is for the Buddhist monks to make merit and also to collect food for their one meal of a day. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience an ancient Buddhist tradition. If you are already up, take the opportunity to visit the local wet market, quite an experience. Today we ride to Mae Sot, one of the main gateways to Myanmar. Instead of using the new main road 105 along the border to Myanmar we will use some smaller back roads. In Ban Kio Lom we turn right and leave Road 108 onto the rural road 1099. We continue to Omkoi and Mae Tuen. From here we are riding the next about 70 km on gravel roads until we meet Road 105 near Mae Ramat. From here we ride on to Mae Sot where we stay overnight.

Day 4 / Mae Sot-Sukhothai

After breakfast, we drive to the nearby "Friendship Bridge" which links Mae Sot in Thailand with Myawaddy in Myanmar. If you like you can cross over by foot and visit the local market in Myawaddy (no visa required – subject to change, optional, 500 THB).

Back in Thailand, we start cruising eastwards on Road 12 to Tak. A wide partly new road with long bends. We proceed to Sukhothai to visit Heritage Park. The historical Sukhothai, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Sukothai was the first capital of Siam. It was founded by King Ramkhamhaeng. The province's temples and monuments have been well restored and the park has numerous sites to explore. After the visit, we reach our nearby hotel, where we stay for the next night.

Day 5 / Sukhothai-Nan

After breakfast, we leave Sukhothai behind us to cruise in a northern direction. On the way to the Sirikit Dam, we see the largest Teak tree in the world in the Ton Sak Yai Forest Park. The tree, estimated to be more than 1,500 years old, is 37 meters high and has a circumference of 9.58 meters at its base.

We continue to the Queen Sirikit Dam, built-in 1973. This dam stands an impressive 160 meters high and 800 meters long and covers an area of 220 square kilometres. We cross the dam with a little ferry. On the other side of the dam, we continue our ride on small provincial roads with hardly any traffic. This is farmland; we pass through a beautiful hilly landscape and countless villages. In the later afternoon, we reach Nan where we stay for this night.

Day 6 / Nan (Rest Day)

Today is a rest day. Enjoy the amenities of the hotel or take a walk through the city of Nan. For the April 2019 departure date, It’s Songkran, Thai new year festival, a great opportunity to join the locals in their celebration. Bring your swimming clothes and get ready for getting wet! For centuries Nan was a separate, autonomous Kingdom with few relationships to the outside world. Now, the city is a beautiful town with many well-preserved temples. Overnight in Nan.

Day 7 / Nan-Chiang Rai

We leave Nan and make our way through the hinterland on small back roads in a north-west direction. We pass through rice fields and fruit plantations and cruise through small farm villages. After our local lunch, the ride becomes more and more spectacular.

For the next hundred km or so we ride road 1148 through countless bends and beautiful landscapes. We rejoin the main road again and follow it to our final destination of the day which is the capital of Chiang Rai. Before we reach our hotel we visit the remarkable Wat Rong Khun (White Temple) which is today recognized as one of the main attractions all over Thailand. We stay overnight in Chiang Rai.

Day 8 / Chiang Rai-Thaton

Another great day is ahead of us. We cruise towards the mighty Mekong River to the legendary Golden Triangle where the three borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet. If you like we can swap the motorcycles for a boat and explore the river region. We even take a short break in Laos (no visa needed) before returning to our motorcycles. Before leaving we drive up to the temple Wat Sop Ruak where we have a great view over the Golden Triangle. Our journey continues to Mae Sai, the northern border point to Myanmar and the most northern point of Thailand. From there the road takes us up the mountain along the Thai – Myanmar border. The road is steep and narrow with a constant change of tarmac and gravel. The scenery is spectacular. Our lunch today will be a picnic in the forest before continuing along back roads to Doi Mae Salong, - a Chinese settlement which was built by a division of the Chinese Nationalist Army that refused to surrender to Chinese communists after the Nationalist Kuomintang government was routed in 1949. Today the village still offers a native Chinese cuisine, lovely houses with flowers and countless tea plantations as far as the eyes can see. Have a break with and glass of tea here in one of the many Tea Shops. The last part of today is on Road 1130 which lead us to the valley of the Maekok River and Thaton. We stay overnight in Thaton.

Today is a rather relaxed riding day but with lots of bends! In the morning we pass two mountains with 2 nice scenic View Points en route. We do a little detour to Ban Rak Thai and enjoy a lunch in one of the local Chinese restaurants by the little lake. They serve delicious Chinese specialities. Ban Rak Thai means literally "the Thai-loving village", built around a lake on the Myanmar border.

After lunch, we continue to Mae Hong Son and the nearby pier to the Longneck village. Enjoy a scenic boat ride on the Pai River for about 20 min to the Karen Long Neck village. The Karen, a tribal minority, historically lived in the hills on the Myanmar side of the border. Some of their women wear heavy brass rings around their necks, forearms, and shins. Many ideas regarding why the coils are worn have been suggested. We return by boat to the pier and ride to the nearby Fern Resort, a lovely resort in the middle of rice paddies.
